Mason & Hamlin Pianos at Napa Valley Jazz Getaway 2014

For 20 years, jazz pianist, composer, producer, and Mason & Hamlin artist Brian Culbertson has dominated the smooth/contemporary jazz scene with his expertly crafted albums and electrifying live performances. His musicianship is evident in the 14 albums he has released, with his last 7 albums charting at #1.

In 2012, Brian created the Napa Valley Jazz Getaway, a 4-day music festival based in Napa Valley, CA that blends great contemporary jazz concerts with the world's finest wine and food experiences. For the third consecutive year, Mason & Hamlin was a corporate sponsor for Napa Valley Jazz Getaway. During the festival held in June, music & wine parties were held at various wineries throughout the valley. Brian hosted a Wednesday evening VIP Welcome Event held at Round Pond Estate Winery in Oakville and performed on a Model B.

Also performing at the VIP Welcome Event at Round Pond was legendary jazz pianist and Pianodisc artist David Benoit. Just south of Round Pond, Mason & Hamlin artist Cecil Ramirez performed with his band at Black Stallion Winery for the NVJG Welcome Dinner while the VIP Welcome Event was underway.

For the Friday VIP lunch event at Rutherford Hill Estate in Rutherford, Brian and David recreated their 2013 "piano2piano" concert with guests seated around the two pianos. Brian performed on a Model BB; David performed on a Model AA.

Mason & Hamlin in "An American Piano" at 67th Cannes Film Festival

"An American Piano" is a short film by Paul Leeming which premiered at the 67th Cannes Film Festival this year. The film is centered on a 16-year old pianist, Yoko Koshida, whose family left Tokyo to escape American bombing raids on the city during World War II. The family found refuge in a house next to an Allied prisoners camp in Yokohama. Yoko found solace from the ravages of war in her piano music, playing a Mason & Hamlin grand piano which sat next to a window in the home. Also finding comfort in her music were the British, US, Australian, and Dutch Allied prisoners captured by the Japanese; they would gather to listen to Yoko play through the barbed wire of their prison camp. Following the Japanese surrender, the men visited Yoko and her family to bring them desperately needed essentials as a gesture of gratitude for the comfort that her piano music brought them while in captivity. Pictured below is Ms. Koshida, now 85-years old, sitting at her Mason & Hamlin grand piano, the same instrument she played for the POWs. "An American Piano" is a story of humanity, compassion, and how the universal beauty of music reaches across the boundaries of language, nationality, and war.
